It’s A Small World After All

We humans are an arrogant bunch. We consider ourselves the epitome of creation and/or evolution. We see ourselves as the reason for, and the focus of, the universe. We look at the sky and see the cosmos as small dots. We are the biggest, most important of all. But then, we can only look outward. It’s a matter of perspective.

First, let’s take a peek at our world. What’s the tallest object you can imagine? How about the tallest tree (Giant redwood tree -111m); the CN Tower (533m); the tallest building (Burj Dubai – 818m) or the tallest mountain (Mt. Everest – 8,848m)? Now, let’s compare any of these to the distance from the center of the earth to the surface (the radius) which is 6,353,000 m or 6,353 Km! The tallest object on our list is Mt. Everest which is only .14% of that radius or a mere pimple on the surface. What’s enormous to us is dwarfed by our own planet. What would happen if we were ‘out there’ and took a look back at Earth?

Let’s launch ourselves into space, just far enough that the earth appears about the size of an orange (80mm). What would our world look like to an alien exploring the universe? Consider that well developed mould on an orange is about the same thickness in proportion as Mount Everest stands above the surface of the Earth and you begin to see how insignificant our life here is. An alien astronomer out there studying the cosmos may well see our planet simply as a funny blue sphere with green mouldy stuff on it.

What’s my point? Simple: we are very insignificant in the grand scheme of the cosmos. There is nothing to be arrogant about. Earth could be obliterated tomorrow by some cosmic accident and it would be but a tiny ripple in the life of the cosmos.

So, how be, we humans eliminate the stupid arrogance we’ve developed. Let’s quit fighting over who will dominate this planet and get on with living in peace and enjoying this beautiful and special place we inhabit. It’s a small world, after all…
